Where to meet entrepreneurs in Sydney
June 17, 2007
So you don’t want to get a job, but would prefer to start your own thing? Way to go! I’ve recently discovered the community I knew must exist somewhere in Sydney – those secret hangouts of the tech entrepreneurs. Like the jobs page, I’ll update this as I discover more.
(Forgive the web company bent, that’s what I’m doing at the moment).
A casual fortnightly meeting over a morning coffee/breakfast for people involved in, or who want to be involved in, the start-up “industry”. The first Open Coffee started in London as an attempt to encourage developers, entrepreneus and investor to meet in person. There are now 73 worldwide and counting. The Sydney group is healthy and growing.
“A BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment.” The Sydney event is a clone of successful events worldwide. A gathering of about 200 “creative tech brains” interested technology, the Internet, and related topics. It looks like this runs approximately quarterly.
A gathering of entrepreneurs and investors over dinner. The first two were held at Cafe Pacifico in February and August of 2007. The first looks and sounds like a success, and I had a great time at the second. This one was organised by Martin Wells from Tangler, who’s now moved to California, so with luck someone will organise another.
Beer and startup geeks getting together. Also a Martin Wells production.
A clone of the very successful STIRR entrepreneurs network in Silicon Valley. The first was in December of 2006 and the second in March 2007. Presentations from startups, networking with VCs, and beer. Bliss!
A regular (looks like quarterly), informal conference on the latest web technologies. Presenters get three minutes to talk about a site or technology or whatever they want.
A more formal (and expensive) web conference. The most recent was September, 2007.
